Cloudant Powers SoftLayer Message Queue Service for Global Scale Application Development

Cloudant today announced that SoftLayer Technologies, a leading provider of global cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), is using the Cloudant NoSQL database-as-a service (DBaaS) to store and distribute application messages and notifications for customers of its new SoftLayer Message Queue Service. The service scales seamlessly across SoftLayer’s global network of data centers and is available now.

“SoftLayer’s queuing service provides many benefits to cloud users,” said Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle. “By leveraging the power of both SoftLayer and Cloudant, users can seamlessly and cost-effectively scale applications with the high-performance they rely on as the needs of their businesses change and grow.”

SoftLayer Message Queue is for developers of distributed Web and mobile applications. It simplifies, secures and guarantees the delivery of messages and notifications between application components so they are easier to develop and can scale without performance bottlenecks. By using Cloudant’s database service to queue data as it moves between distributed components of an application, Message Queue makes it easier to complete asynchronous tasks, workflows, and bulk data processing under heavy load. Compared to other databases that SoftLayer considered, Cloudant provided fault-tolerant message persistence and 10-times higher message throughput.

“Our collaboration with Cloudant gives Web and application developers unlimited potential to scale virtually any type of application,” said Marc Jones, vice president of product innovation at SoftLayer. “Their DBaaS scales well across the global SoftLayer cloud infrastructure, and the database performance and scalability insight the Cloudant team has to offer stands out and has resulted in a differentiated service.”

The SoftLayer Message Queue is available both as a queuing service and as a notification broker to support one-to-one messaging between individual application components and one-to-many notifications to other application pieces or independent software systems. The service is driven by a RESTful Web services API, and provides language bindings for Ruby, Python, Java, PHP, Scala, Go, Clojure, Objective-C, and C#.
