Community Development Programs, Peace Parade and Musical Presentations Mark International Day of Peace Celebrations

UST Global, an information technology solutions and services company for Global 1000 enterprises, celebrated Peace Day, also known as International Day of Peace — an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence recognized by United Nations on 21 September every year — across its offices and centers in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. This aligns with UST Global’s mission of jobs, technology, training and peace to impact and transform lives in the community it operates.

Thousands of UST Global employees from different parts of the world took part in diverse activities around the theme of peace. In India, where the company has a workforce of more than 10,000, patriotism soared high as employees from the Bangalore center organized Peace Parade to pay tribute to eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela, who stood for peace throughout their life. In Thiruvananthapuram, Peace Walk, slogan writing and face painting competitions added fervor to the celebrations.

The employees of Chennai and Malaysia lit candles at their campus and prayed for those who lost their lives to violence. Peace songs, dance and poem writing competitions were the other highlights at the Chennai center. In Kochi, UST Global conducted drawing and essay competition for children of government schools associated with UST Global’s Sustainable Development Programs for community development. Celebrity guest and renowned writer Sippy Pallipuram gave away prizes to the winners.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, poem reading and melodies of group songs rang in the celebrations. The senior management of UST Global also sent out a video message to the employees on the occasion.

Speaking on the relevance of Peace Day for the company, Sajan Pillai, Chief Executive Officer, UST Global said, “As a corporate, our ability to transform the lives of those around us is how we measure success at UST Global. We believe that transformation is sustainable only when it is bound by a fabric of peace. To give momentum to this thought, we joined hands with Peace One Day last year to create and develop sustainable peace across communities and geographies.” He added, “I take this moment to also express our gratitude to our employees who have ably given wings to our mission of building a knowledge capital by helping give equal opportunities to all by giving back to the community.”

UST Global, in collaboration with Peace One Day, also successfully launched the ‘#tweetforpeace’ campaign at the first annual Peace One Day London gala dinner on 3rdSeptember, where corporates pledged to raise awareness of Peace Day and contribute to Peace One Day’s goal of reaching 1.5 billion people with the message of Peace Day using their social media networks. It will also help in spreading the message on Facebook and Twitter; #MakePeace #PeaceOneDay and #PeaceDay are the official hashtags for World Peace Day.

About Peace One Day

Founded in 1999 by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, the non-profit organization Peace One Day drove the initiative that led to the unanimous adoption by the United Nations member states of an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September — Peace Day.

In 2007, Jeremy Gilley and Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan to help develop and document preparations for life-saving activities across the country for Peace Day. As a result of this work, since 2007, Peace Day agreements in the region have resulted in the immunization against polio of 4.5 million children.

With the day well-established, Peace One Day’s objective is to institutionalize Peace Day around the world, making it self-sustaining. A report supported by McKinsey & Company estimated that around 470 million people were aware of Peace Day in 2013, with around 8 million behaving more peacefully as a result of being involved in activities on the day. Peace One Day’s target for 2014 is to reach 1.5 billion people with the message of Peace Day.
