This will be a fun and inspiring event where volunteers can put their data skills to work for social good. Come and help the Calgary Distress Centre get the most out of the data they have been collecting on their important services. Analysis and visualization of the data will lead to insights that will improve operations and to recommendations that will benefit the entire community.
Are you someone who loves to explore data and wants to do good for the community? Want to work with some interesting & engaging data? Join us for this exciting DataThon organized by Data for Good at the University of Calgary. At this event we will be working with exciting data from the Calgary Distress Centre. This dataset features over 2GB of anonymized information about more than two million phone calls, dating back to 2003. You do not need to be an expert to take part, but you should have knowledge of or interest in social data, data analytics, visualization, programming, statistics, or data science.
An army of volunteer data experts will be hacking away into the wee hours by the light of their laptops.
Data for Good — Calgary volunteers will be available to discuss “data in the service of humanity” and representatives of the Distress Centre will also be onsite. For interviews in advance of the DataThon please use the contact information provided below.

About Data for Good — Calgary:
Data for Good – Calgary brings together leading data experts with high impact social organizations (not-for-profits, etc.) to help these organizations achieve their missions and make the world a better place. The NFP/NGO and social innovation sector is doing important work, but may not have the time, skills or resources to effectively collect, understand and use data for better decision making-that’s where data experts come in to lend a hand. Follow us on twitter @DataForGoodYYC where we’ll be live-tweeting the DataThon using #datathonyyc.
