Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world’s leader in advanced semiconductor solutions, announced that it is targeting its logic solutions at three of today’s fastest growing consumer electronics (CE) markets: portable navigation devices (PND), digital photo frames (DPF), and mobile Internet devices (MID). Samsung’s System LSI division is enabling designers to bring these next-generation consumer electronics devices to market more quickly with an optimized bill-of-materials cost.
“The ability to access the Internet and web services anytime anywhere is the future of next-generation consumer devices,” said Dr. Yiwan Wong, vice president of marketing for Samsung’s System LSI Division. “Our application processor (AP) product roadmap puts us squarely at the center of this next CE wave, positioning Samsung to be the vendor of choice for cost-effective connected CE devices.”
Samsung’s application processor family empowers the development of next generation, multimedia and graphics-intensive mobile consumer electronic devices. Developers now have the flexibility to design-in the most compelling combinations of next-generation functionality such as wireless communications, location-based services, digital still and video photography, gaming, portable music/video playing, mobile TV and 3D graphics into a single device.
“Today’s consumers want electronic devices that are personal, always on, always connected, and with full Internet capabilities,” said Ian Drew, vice president, Segment Marketing, ARM. “As a valued partner, Samsung delivers to design engineers a complete SoC architecture solution on the latest ARM processors with high quality multimedia capabilities and lower power consumption.”
For over 4 years and with approximately 60% market share, Samsung has been supplying application processors to top-tier PND manufacturers. As one of the fastest growing consumer electronics markets, PND functions have advanced to meet consumer demand. Today, consumers purchasing PND devices are looking for high-performance, graphics capabilities that allow 3D maps and landmarks to be displayed as well as the processing capability to handle route calculations and satellite acquisition in a short period of time. With an application processor product portfolio that covers the entire range of multimedia processing capabilities, Samsung offers application processor solutions with an optimized feature set that enables PND designers to develop any type of next-generation device.
With worldwide shipments for digital picture frames climbing, DPFs have the potential to become the centerpiece of the connected home with wireless Internet connectivity and multimedia capabilities. Samsung’s processors for this market meet the technical criteria to support next-generation consumer devices with high performance and multimedia functionality. Working with our OEMs to understand the performance requirements for DPFs, Samsung leverages its existing AP portfolio, including powerful hardware accelerators, to handle computation intensive tasks such as motion video processing, video display control and scaling. Samsung plans to offer processor solutions that can support a wide range of frame sizes as well as capabilities.
As a relatively new category in consumer electronics, MIDs have the potential for explosive growth. MID developers and system designers need to address higher performance and lower power consumption in these full-featured, space-constrained devices. Samsung is a strong partner of ARM and is leveraging its years of experience in smart phones and PNDs to develop solutions targeted at this emerging market.
